rather (than), instead (of) の本当の意味、使い方とは?

rather(むしろ)と instead(その代わりに)と言えば、中学生でも知っている常識単語です。

  • not ―. Rather, ~.
  • not ―. Instead, ~.

  1. He isn't a good boy. Rather, he is a terrible fellow.
  2. She never studies. Instead, she watches television all day.

not A but B

  • not A but BA ではなく B

ただし、not A but B の場合同士をつなぎますが、not A. Instead/Rather, B. では[]をつなぐという違いがあります。

  1. He isn't a good boy but a terrible fellow.
  2. She never studies but watches television all day.

ここでちょっと not A but B について補足しておきます。not A but B重要な構文として教わりますが、そもそもこれがなぜ重要なのでしょうか。

instead of ~/rather than との関係

B(筆者の主張)」である

Aleksander says malfunctions are engineering problem rather than moral problems. “A properly functioning conscious machine is going to drive your car and it’s going to drive it safely. It will be very pleased when it does that; it’s going to be worried if it has an accident. If suddenly it decides, ‘I’m going to kill my passenger and drive into a wall,’ that’s an incorrect functioning,' he says. “Human beings can function wrongly in that way. For human beings, you have the law to control behavior, for machines you have engineering procedures.”

Aleksander thinks that we should
1. consider the behavior of machines as a moral question
2. see the improper behavior of machines as engineering questions
3. have laws to enable us to judge machine behavior as we judge human behavior.
4. use completely new techniques to deal with the incorrect behavior of machine

Since the first appearance of life on Earth, hundreds of millions of species have disappeared, an average of something like one species going extinct every year. The earth, however, still survives. The alarming fact for us to consider is that the current waves of extinction of species are not like those of the past. Species extinction now is happening much faster ― several hundred or even several thousand species dying off each year instead of one ― and the causes of extinction are different.

instead of ( ) dying off each year

1. one species 2. one living thing
3. one human being 4. one thousand species

Nevertheless, the case against current global migration patterns cannot rest on such feelings. Political ideas which spring from deep-seated racial prejudice should be unacceptable in the twenty-first century. Such ideas also be short-sighted. When immigrants adapt to the society around them, today's headache might easily become tomorrow's comfort. Instead, we should look beyond the naïve rhetoric of racism and nationalism to see why rapid migration flows may threaten not just the stability of the host country, but global prosperity.

1. Arguments against global migration are best made without reference to race.
2. Better arguments against global migration often lead to racial prejudice.
3. Policies based on prejudice are inevitable in the modern world.
4. We should not be blind to the potential benefits of migration.

Designers’ frustration at seeing their ideas mimicked is understandable. But this is a classic case where the cure may be worse than disease. There’s little evidence that knockoffs are damaging the business. Fashion sales have remained more than healthy ― estimates value the global luxury-fashion sector at 130 billion dollars ― and the high-end firms that so often see their designs copied have become stronger. More striking, a recent paper by law professors Kal Raustiala and Christopher Springman suggests that weak intellectual-property rules ( ) the fashion industry, have instead been essential to its success. The professors can this effect “piracy paradox.”

1. alone in supporting
2. apart from helping
3. close to damaging
4. far from hurting
5. next to copying
